It's actually illegal for telemarketers to call w/o a callback number coming through on CID. You should try to get the name of the company who is calling and the company they're calling for. They can be reported to both the FTC and the DMA. (Surprisingly, the DMA is responsive and makes their members to follow the rules.)
Well, I'm guessing you're in the US. ... no wait, you've got favorite spelled with a 'u'. I can't speak for the laws outside the US, but maybe this comment will be of interest to other readers.

Yeah, I'm based in Australia. Doesn't appear to be to be illegal to call with CID switched off here, as the only time I ever had a telemarketer call with it on was one that was some sort of competition scam.
Cheers, Paul
Can you just force callers to dial a pin number (extension?) before the phone even rings?

Hi Nick.. yep, that's definitely possible. Not a bad idea if you only ever get a few personal callers. My line is used for work, though, so it's not a solution that I can use.
Cheers, Paul
One of my personal favorites is the "Yes, dear" recording. Make a 3 or 4 minute loop with various approving sounds, interspersed with delays. "Yes... um hmm.... ok... so, I'm not clear on that part, can you go over that again? Yes... I see..." Then play that back to telemarketers. It sometimes takes up to 5 minutes before they really figure out they're talking to a recording. Make sure you leave plenty of dead air between comments, since most telemarketers have a LONG spiel that they blast out if they get the slightest sign of approval.
I bounce telemarketers right to that recording if there's no caller ID or the caller ID is a toll-free number. You should check the legality of recording such sessions in your area, but listening to the responses of callers to recordings of that nature is quite amusing.
You should not blame telemarketers. You can blame your society for your globalization, commercialization, consumerism, etc. You suffer from your own doing.

Well how about transferring there call to 911.
or Tell them to hold set the phone down for 1 minute then go back on and what were you saying, after 15 seconds please hold again this time allow three minutes to pass, repeat as necessary until the idiot goes away. If you live in NY state get the business name & number and what they are selling and play nice until you have all the information then ask for their supervisor. Ask the supervisors name and keep elevating it until you can go no higher. Tell that person that every person you spoke to will be reported to the NY state attorney general for a direct violation of the do not call registry law. Then go online, print the form, and send it in. Maybe they might get the message then they are slapped with a multiple thousand dollar fine. Crash symbols in there ear Put the phone next to a speaker and blast Type O Negative (a very loud band) Inconvenience them and play with them, the goal is to annoy and frustrate them.
